If you've had — or are planning — a gastric sleeve (VSG), gastric bypass (RNY), lap band, or ESG, you know the daily protein puzzle: 60–80g per day from a stomach that holds 2–4oz. Protein bars are one of the easiest ways to hit that target without preparing another shake. But not every bar works post-op.
This guide breaks down the best bariatric-friendly protein bars we carry in Canada — all under 5g sugar per bar, all 15g+ protein, all sweetened with bariatric-tolerated alternatives (monk fruit, stevia, erythritol, allulose).
What to look for in a bariatric protein bar
- Protein ≥15g per bar — ideally 20g+ to hit daily targets in fewer servings
- Sugar ≤5g — to avoid dumping syndrome (most common with RNY bypass)
- Sweetener type: monk fruit, stevia, erythritol, allulose — avoid maltitol
- Net carbs — under 15g for most plans; under 10g for stricter keto-bariatric
- Calorie density — 150–250 cal per bar; higher means you're filling stomach space with non-protein
- Texture — Stage 3+ patients (month 2 onward) tolerate most bars; earlier stages need shakes or soft foods

About maltitol
Several popular bariatric bars (Barebells, Grenade, some Quest) include maltitol as a sweetener. Maltitol has a glycemic index of ~35 — much lower than sugar but not zero. Some bariatric patients tolerate it fine; others experience GI distress or mini blood sugar spikes. If you're maltitol-sensitive, prioritize bars sweetened with allulose, monk fruit, or pure stevia: David, Magic Spoon, ChocZero treats.
How many bars per day?
Typical bariatric daily plan:
- Stage 1 (weeks 1–2): protein shakes only — no bars
- Stage 2 (weeks 3–4): 0–1 soft bar per day (Built, Magic Spoon Treats) — chew thoroughly
- Stage 3 (month 2+): 1–2 bars per day as snacks alongside meals + shake
Always follow your bariatric team's specific protocol — plans vary by surgeon and patient.
